13-axis robot to assemble flanges with guidance of 3D vision systems

Motoman, the robotic division of Yaskawa Electric Corporation, has announced that the first 13-axis dual- arm robot, Motoman-DA20 (Figure 1) has been sold to the system partner KP- Industri in Denmark. KP-Industri has in turn sold a system including the robot to IPL Group, which is a cell with double 3D vision systems – one vision system on each robot arm. The system will be assembling flanges onto cogwheels with diameters ranging from 25 to 120mm.

IPL Group, which is the only serial producing company of cogwheels in Europe, has chosen robotic automation due to the competition from the Chinese market, where the main part of cogwheels are produced.

KP-Industri, showed the new unique robot type, DA20, at the exhibition “Automatik 2006” 5-7 September in Brøndby, Denmark, where the 3D vision system was demonstrated as well. They expect that the new robot type from Motoman together with the vision system will, with great advantages reduce the number of hard physical manual assembly operations in the plastics and metal industries.
