Based on personal experience, describes how Cobham Sensor Systems in the USA (defence company) improved employee engagement in the company as part of its drive to improve quality and productivity. Lists the behaviours that were identified as necessary among employees – communication, focus, accountability, self-development, balance and the ability to have fun. Explains how these behaviours were developed and reinforced among employees and managers. In particular, describes the use of a “flight plan” in which an employee would describe a job or skill that he or she would develop or extend in the coming year, and their achievement of this celebrated in the workplace. Sets out the positive impact that these developments had on organizational performance, including a huge drop in employee turnover.ISSN: 1047-3149Reference: 40AP674
