Discusses how the recession has affected the organizational standing of human resource practitioners in the USA. Argues that the need to handle layoffs and cut labour costs could have had either a positive of a negative impact on the extent to which the human resource managers are seen as business partners. Looks at what has happened in practice, reporting the results of a survey of around 1000 human resource executives and other types of managers in large US corporations. Reports that the human resource function has generally emerged from the recession with an increase in it strategic role and with more power.
