Purpose – Examines the reasons why many managers strive to achieve success in the corporate environment yet fail through a lack of a true sense of professional satisfaction and fulfilment. Design/methodology/approach – The problem of finding job satisfaction and fulfilment at work is exemplified by the paradox of managers who are at the top of their field yet have hated their jobs for many years. Considers some of the career strategies that managers can use when striving to improve the way they feel about their jobs. Findings – It is suggested that finding satisfaction and fulfilment involves managers taking a very personal look at how they really define success within themselves (introspection) and then follow their your own path to its conclusion. Stresses that the managers are the ones responsible for managing their careers, and not their bosses. Points particularly to the fact that, to reach their potential, managers need to know themselves, particularly their strengths, weaknesses, and passions, and identify and excel at the tasks critical to success in their jobs, while demonstrating both character and leadership. Originality/value – Provides a three-step path to guide managers towards a situation where they can reach their full potential. ISSN: 0017-8012 Reference: 37AR076
