Purpose – Advises US organizations on how to develop knowledge capture systems that will enable organizations to retain the knowledge of employees who are about to leave their employment. Design/methodology/approach – Describes how this has been done at LyondellBasell, a polymer manufacturer, 3M, IBM and others, looking at how they gain the information and knowledge from staff before they leave and how they make it accessible to other employees. Also describes how they have set up systems that enable employees who have developed solutions to problems add these to knowledge management systems. Notes the example of the American Cancer Society that keeps in touch with retired employees and seeks their help if their expertise is needed. Findings – Underlines the need for organizations to retain the knowledge that employees have developed while they have worked for them. Points out that the solutions can vary from extremely high-tech to low-tech. Originality/value – Offers some guidance based on the experience of US organizations. ISSN: 1047-3149 Reference: 37AP664
