Purpose – Explains how Royal Mail Group has worked with Job Centre Plus to develop the UK government’s Access to Work scheme which was set up to support employers to employ more disabled people by giving them grants to make reasonable adjustments. Discusses the changes made to the scheme that made it more effective in supporting Royal Mail Group to employ more disabled people. Design/methodology/approach – Discusses how and why the project was set up. Sets out how Job Centre Plus and Royal Mail Group changed their systems for administering the Access to Work scheme to make it more effective. Findings – Argues that the experience of Royal Mail Group shows that Access to Work can be made more effective if both the employer and Job Centre Plus work together to streamline systems and, consequently, reduce the time and cost of making the workplace adjustments necessary to enable disabled people to take up employment.
