Purpose – Describes how Globe Ground India, an subsidiary of Lufthansa, which operates passenger and cargo handling services for the airline in India, set up a human resource project to improve the retention and motivation of staff. Design/methodology/approach – Explains how focus interviews were used to gauge employee attitudes towards the firm and to identify the areas of human resource management that were most important in motivating staff. Outlines how the firm acted on the findings and outlines the impact of these actions. Findings – Reports that remuneration, benefits, training and clarity about human resource policies and practices were found to have the most influence on employee attitudes. Indicates the steps that were taken to improve these. Highlights that the attrition rate among employees had halved six months after the end of the project. Practical implications – Describes the methods used to analyze employees’ priorities. Originality/value – Presents a case study of a successful attempt to improve employee retention and motivation.
