Purpose – Argues that managers need to create a positive atmosphere at work if they are to get the best performance out of their staff. Design/methodology/approach – Discusses how to diagnose if the atmosphere at work is stressful and downbeat, the reasons why such an atmosphere feeds into poor performance, and how to manage staff so that they feel positive about their job and the workplace. Cites successful UK companies that employ these techniques and are widely recognized as good companies to work for. Findings – Stresses the need for managers to give staff balanced feedback on their performance in which the strengths of their performance are highlighted as well as any weaknesses. Contends that this builds a strengths culture in the workplace in which employees are helped to identify their personal strengths and overcome their weaknesses, in which everyone contributes towards the overall performance of the team and in which learning and development opportunities and good communications are commonplace.
