Purpose – Looks at why human resource outsourcing fails and advises on how to do it effectively. Design/methodology/approach – Quotes from human resource practitioners and human resource service providers about the ways in which human resource outsourcing has been mishandled by UK companies and on how to handle it properly. Findings – Argues that many failures are caused by the firm that wanting to outsource its human resource management, not taking enough responsibility for specifying the nature and quality of the services it is contracting out. Also criticizes firms for outsourcing to save money rather than to gain a more effective service. Underlines that the human resource managers need to draw up outsourcing contracts carefully and monitor them regularly. Also underlines that they should manage the transition to outsourced service carefully to maintain the morale of both the staff who move and those who are retained. Originality/value – Advises on successful human resource outsourcing.ISSN: 0964-8380Reference: 35AJ096
