Purpose – Describes the steps that have been taken by Goldman Sachs, the international investment banker, to increase the diversity of its workforce. Design/methodology/approach – Explains the role of the office of Global Leadership and Diversity, which has a mandate to translate the firm’s diversity policies into specific actions that promote diversity. Sets out how the firm’s employee networks support the diversity policy and also describes the specific initiatives that the firm has set up to attract and retain disabled employees and women. Explains the importance placed on ensuring middle managers promote the diversity strategy within their teams. Lastly explains the work being done to ensure supplier diversity. Findings – Underlines the value of employee networks in supporting employees, who come from groups of people who have traditionally been under-represented in Goldman Sachs. Also discusses the value of the networks in shaping the firm’s future diversity policies and practices. Also stresses the need for diversity to be a general business and management issue rather than being seen as being a human resource management issue. Originality/value – Describes how a firm operating in the traditional world of investment banking is tackling diversity management.ISSN: 0268-7143Reference: 35AJ930
