Purpose – Describes how Washington Group, the US engineering and construction company, handles employee development and training. Design/methodology/approach – Quotes from Steve Hanks, chief executive of the Washington Group, about why the company spends $50 million per year on employee development, how employee development is linked to the performance management of employees, and how this supports team working and organizational performance. Also quotes from Noe Hernandez-Saenz, a project manager at Washington Group about the training that he has received, particularly his involvement in a weeklong forum which was designed to develop the business planning and presentation skills of the participants. Findings – Points out that Washington Group has won several important construction contracts because of its reputation for having developed a highly skilled workforce.
