Purpose – examines the labor trends in the USA to assess if the predictions of an impending labor shortage are correct. Design/methodology/approach – sets out the statistics for US population for 1980, 1990 and 2000 with projections for 2010, broken down by age, gender and ethnicity. Discusses the changes within the working population that this reveals and the implications for human resource management, particularly, recruitment and retention. Findings – concludes that US employers are going to face real difficulties in recruiting and retaining employees with the skills that they need. Indicates a potential solution if employers encourage older workers to remain in employment. Practical implications – discusses the nature of the labor shortages that US employers will face and advises human resource managers to identify strategies for dealing with these. Originality/value – sets out the evidence that indicates that labor market in the USA has changed and discusses the threat of skills shortages.Style: Research paper
