Abstract

Findings
This review investigates gossip and how it contributes to building personal reputation. Deviated behavior from group norms causes an individual to become the center of gossip. Gossip is more effective than formal modes of communication for promoting personal reputation. Importantly, the deviated behavior must be detected by an audience and warranted significant enough to be passed on to a group for evaluation and discussion to affect reputation.
Originality/value
The briefing saves busy executives and researchers hours of reading time by selecting only the very best, most pertinent information and presenting it in a condensed and easy-to-digest format.
