Improving Vegetable Production in Ukraine
Abstract
The Ukraine Vegetable Project is one of several British Food Consortium activities currently operating in the Kiev region of Ukraine. Describes how the UK team took over the management of a 70‐hectare field on Iskra State Farm, growing a range of vegetables for consumers in Kiev; with the objective of demonstrating and adapting British growing, harvesting, storage and marketing techniques. In the first year crop yields far exceeded those on the rest of the farm as a result of the use of better varieties and in field management of resources. The project team have also advised one of the region′s vegetable storage bases on ways to improve the storability of harvested crops. Results indicate that the project has so far been very successful with an increase in enquiries for Iskra vegetables and the setting of new standards for prices in the region.
