The HSE has published statistics of fatal injuries for 2002/2003. The figures show that the number of fatally injured workers fell by 10 per cent last year. There were 226 works deaths – 71 of these were in construction.

At the same time the HSC have expressed concern that local authority health and safety inspection rates fell by 10 per cent last year.

The HSE has published a discussion document seeking opinions on the regulation of first aid at work.

The HSE has published guidance (in the form of a chart and a Web site: www.hse.gov.uk/msd/mac) on ways to protect workers’ backs.

The Asbestos (Prohibition) Regulations 1992 have been amended. The importation of products containing asbestos is brought into line with the existing prohibition on supply and use of asbestos containing materials.
