Purpose – examines three Australian social networking web site (Web 2.0) developers to see how they approached the task of finding finance, the right staff, and a viable business model. Design/methodology/approach – interviews were conducted with the entrepreneurs behind the three Web 2.0 companies: Bluepulse (Ben Keighran); Remember the Milk (Omar Kilani); and Atlassian (Mike Cannon-Brookes), to gain indications of their original aims and how they are currently planning their business. Findings – Bluepulse moved from Australia to Silicon Valley, California, to gain access to venture capital, Atlassian has chosen to remain in Australia and believes that this is the best way to raise finance, while Remember the Milk, continues to be run on a shoestring in Sydney, Australia. Originality/value – demonstrates how very different Web 2.0 companies can face the same problems but tackle them in different ways.ISSN: 1324-5945Reference: 37AZ075
