Investing in Turkey

Boland V., Turgut P., O’Byrne D., Marsh P., Turgut P. Financial Times, 18 July 2007, Start page: 1, No. of pages: 6

Purpose – To examine the political and economic situation in Turkey. Design/methodology/approach – Looks at how the ruling Turkish centre-right Justice and Development Party has continued its sell-off of state assets; illustrates with the example of Petkim (Turkey’s leading chemical group); highlights how investors have been willing to pay high prices for the assets. Examines why strategic investors and the private equity industry are targeting Turkey and suggests that whoever wins the Turkish election (July 2007), investor interest is likely to continue; identifies those areas where foreign investors would like to see the government make further reforms. Puts forward that while the Turkish economy is currently flourishing, there is the danger that if global liquidity shifts away from emerging markets, it may have a detrimental impact on the Turkish economy. Reports how Turkey has become a property hotspot; draws attention to the growth of the retail sector; explores HSBCs strategy aimed at becoming one of the top five banks in turkey; examines the energy sector and the operations of two of Turkeys largest companies; identifies the foreign investments in Turkey. Originality/value – Explores why investors are so keen on Turkey.ISSN: 0307-1766Reference: 36AU974
