Netting profits (internet financial services)

Birch D. Financial World, November 2006, Start page: 18, No. of pages: 3

Purpose – to forecast the use of the internet by financial services companies. Design/methodology/approach – maps available technology in three layers, separating processing technologies from connection technologies and identifies those that are widely adopted, are still being developed, and “on the horizon”. Cites Moore’s law, Metcalfe’s Law and Reed’s Law, focusing on the speed of adoption of disconnection technology. Findings – finds that improvements in disconnection technology will mean “fundamental changes to business models based around value networks”. Notes that security concerns will moderate progress. Practical implications – forecasts infinite processing power by 2040, with universal access to all information. Originality/value – presents blue-sky thinking about internet development.
