Ciba Specialty Chemicals, Performance Polymers, has introduced two new high-strength epoxy adhesives formulated for use at temperatures of 250°F (121°C) and 300°F (149°C) respectively. The structural paste adhesives are designed for joining metals, composites and dissimilar materials.

Epibond 1590-A/B toughened, 300°F epoxy (Plate 10) is described as a flowable paste with a 50-minute work life. After curing for five days at 105°F (40°C) or one hour at 212°F (100°C), the adhesive is said to exhibit an outstanding aluminum/aluminum lap shear strength of 5,800psi and Bell peel of 33-pli at room temperature. It reportedly can be used at temperatures up to 300°F (149°C).

Plate 10 Epibond 1590-A/B and Epibond 1595-A/B toughened epoxies are ideal for assembling metal and composite parts that will be exposed to temperatures up to 300°F

Epibond 1595-A/B toughened, 250°F epoxy adhesive is said to be a non-flow paste that gels after 15 minutes. Full cure is reported to be achieved after five days at 105°F (40°C) or two hours at 212°F (100°C). Typical physical characteristics include an aluminum/aluminum lap shear strength of 5,000psi and Bell peel of 82pli at room temperature. It claims a service temperature of 250°F (121°C).

Both epoxy adhesives are supplied in dual-barrel cartridges for neat, easy dispensing.

Ciba also informs us that it has developed an optically clear, UV stable urethane adhesive for bonding thermoplastics including polycarbonate, acrylic and ABS as well as fibreglass, glass, and metals. The new urethane is said to be specially designed to produce durable, invisible bondlines in the assembly of signs, optical devices, computer components and aircraft parts.

Plate 11 Uralane 6100-A/B urethane adhesive is optically clear and UV stable for producing tough bonds on thermoplastics as well as fibreglass, glass and metal

Uralane 6100-A/B clear urethane (Plate 11) can reportedly be applied to substrates without requiring sanding or other surface preparation. According to Ciba, the system gels in two to three minutes and can be handled after one hour. Complete cure is achieved after two days at room temperature or two hours at 150°F (66°C). The cured adhesive is said to exhibit a polycarbonate/polycarbonate lap shear strength of 950psi at room temperature and elongation of 400 per cent. The new product is supplied in convenient, 50ml dual-barrel dispensing cartridges as well as in conventional packaging.
