This is a collection of papers inspired by the Fourth International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries, held in Singapore in 2002. Key players and eminent researchers in digital library research and development were invited to provide their views on the issues and challenges faced across the world. The papers are grouped into six sections covering digital library development, design architecture and systems, implementation issues and challenges, use and impact, users and usability, and future trends of digital libraries. The authors of the 20 papers are practitioners and academics from the USA, South Africa, India, Indonesia, Taiwan, China, Singapore, New Zealand, Canada, Hong Kong, Philippines, Japan, Malaysia and the UK. Most papers are accompanied by extensive bibliographies with further information sources listed in an eight-page appendix.
