Weight matters in primary care

This took place 5 November 2004 at the National Hockey Stadium, Milton Keynes.

Obesity is on the rise and with its associated problems is going to cause Primary Care groups in the NHS to take a much greater role in its prevention.

This conference addressed weight management as an holistic approach bringing together experts from all public health disciplines exploring dietary, pharmacological and behavioural approaches to weight management.

Speakers included:

  • Paula Hunt a dietitian described the role of commercial weight management companies such as Weight Watchers in weight management.

  • Omar Ali, a pharmacist, detailed the role of pharmacotherapy in weight management.

  • Other presentations included the role of meal replacements in the management of diabetes type 2 where gross obesity is a problem, gross obesity in children, information on the BBC diet trials, the role of activity in weight management and weight management for men.
