Proviva Scientific Dossier Lactobacillus plantarum LP 299v

Executive Summary: Lactobacillus plantarum 299v (LP299v) has all the key properties of a successful probiotic:

  • Oral dose of LP299v in a fermented oatmeal drink has been shown to survive transit through the upper digestive tract and to reach the colon in significant numbers.

  • LP299v attaches to the intestinal mucosa using a specific adhesion mechanism.

  • LP299v is able to inhibit the in vitro attachment of pathogenic coliform organisms through a characterised mechanism. This is a necessary property of a successful probiotic as it demonstrates the ability to boost colonisation resistance.

  • There is evidence that LP299v can stabilise the flora in people with acute diarrhoea, as well as inhibiting the growth of the intestinal pathogen Clostridium difficile (a further indication that it boosts colonisation resistance).

  • Through its ability to promote normalisation of the gut bacterial flora, LP299v is a useful tool in the management of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea even in critically ill patients in intensive care who are receiving concurrent antibiotics.

  • LP299v is useful in reducing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, either alone or in conjunction with standard drug therapy. This probably results from its ability to promote normalisation of the gut bacterial flora, and reduce the presence of gas-producing enterobacteria.

  • Preliminary data suggest that LP299v may help to improve chronic recurrent abdominal pain in childhood.

  • Some studies show that LP299v can promote a valuable immune response, even in children who are severely immunocompromised.

  • LP299v appears to beneficially modify some cardiovascular risk factors and may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease.

In summary, a growing body of evidence suggests that LP299v has properties that are useful in both the prevention and the treatment of bacterial disease of the gastrointestinal tract. LP299v may also have beneficial effects on immune function and cardiovascular health.
