Heart surgeons are turning to B vitamins

Researchers and cardiologists have discovered that B vitamins can prevent repeat blockage of the coronary artery after angioplasty (a procedure whereby surgeons compress plaques against the vessel wall, by expanding a balloon-like device inserted through a catheter threaded through the artery).

Up to 40 percent of patients who undergo coronary angioplasty develop a new blockage, therefore the operation carried out has failed and needs to be repeated or patients are given a by-pass operation, which are all very costly procedures.

Fish oils reduce the risk of stroke in women

According to research, higher consumption of mega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids is associated with a reduced risk of some types of stroke among middle aged women.

Fish oils are rich in omega 3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). These fatty acids are converted in the body to the beneficial series 3 prostaglandins. These omega 3 fatty acids have many beneficial roles in the body: heart health (altering the balance of blood fats, maintaining regular heart beat and viscosity of blood, thereby facilitating blood flow), the development of the foetus and improvement in the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.
