Exercise on prescription for NHS patients
The Department of Health has for the first time allowed GPs to prescribe exercise on prescription through gyms and local leisure centres. Those who can benefit from more exercise are those suffering from heart disease, stroke and diabetes. More exercise may also be beneficial to those suffering from mental health problems such as depression and those suffering during rehabilitation following falls and accidents. Experts recommend that people should try to be active for half an hour on five or more days of the week. Surveys show that six out of ten men and seven in ten women are not sufficiently active to benefit their health. It is estimated that regular exercise can halve the risk of heart disease.
