National Food Survey for second quarter of 1999

National Food Survey for second quarter of 1999

Results from this survey show that household purchases of sugar and preserves were down 17 per cent, fats down by 8 per cent and milk and cream by 6 per cent compared with the same period for 1998. Consumption of fresh fruit rose by 10 per cent on the second quarter of 1998 although the increase was markedly lower in the first six months of 1999 taken as a whole. With higher prices than in the same quarter of 1998, purchases of oranges were down 21 per cent and apples 7 per cent but these purchases were more than offset by higher consumption of bananas, grapes, other stoned fruit and other fresh fruit. Household purchases of fresh green vegetables rose by 6 per cent largely due to increased purchases of cauliflower and leafy salads. As a result of reduced purchases of canned vegetables, chips and other potato products, consumption of processed vegetables fell by 7 per cent.
