Safe and sound
Tessa Jowett, the Minister for Public Health, recently announced the second phase of the Safe and Sound challenge to all schools in England. Cash prizes of up to £6,000 will be awarded to schemes which meet the challenge to develop safe and healthy forms of travel to school such as walking and cycling. The schools have to ensure that children's personal safety is not jeopardised in any way. The challenge is part of the Healthy Schools Programme which is jointly funded by the Department of Health and the Department for Education and Employment. It also has the support of the Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions. Successful entries might include pedestrian and cyclist training, installation of secure cycle parking, education programmes aimed at parents, teachers and pupils and training of volunteers to provide safety advice. For registration packs schools should contact the Challenge Hotline on 0870 9010906. The closing date is 20 December 1999 with judging in January 2000.
