Global Risk 2010 Report: Profile of environmental risks continues to rise

Article Type: Feature From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 21, Issue 3

The likelihood and severity of the global impact of most environment-related risks is forecast to increase, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has revealed in its Global Risks 2010 report.

The WEF said that infrastructure underinvestment ranks alongside fiscal crises and chronic diseases as a top risk for 2010. For the first time, biodiversity loss is highlighted as a key risk. Transport, water and energy infrastructure all need urgent significant investment to meet “the dual challenge of population growth and climate change”, the report states. In a draft resolution on climate adaptation, MEPs call on the European Commission to seek support from insurers to “climate-proof” infrastructure projects. It is believed that slower investment in new electricity generation capacity in 2009, particularly from renewable sources, may threatens energy security with potential impacts on a wide range of sectors.
