Managing by values: cultural redesign for strategic organizational change at the dawn of the 21st century
Dolan, S.L. and Garcia, S., Journal of Management Development, 2002, Vol. 21 No. 2.
Argues that a new model of management is needed for business, contending that "management by instructions" and "management by objectives" are no longer appropriate and that the new model should be based on "management by values". Sets out the premises on which management by values is based. Identifies the evolutionary trend from "management by instructions" through "management by objectives" to the final model "management by values", indicating the differences between them. Explains the factors that have given this evolutionary trend impetus – the need for quality and customer orientation; the need for greater professionalism, autonomy and responsibility; the need for managers to become leaders and facilitators; and the need for flatter and more agile organizational structures. Sets out the advantages that management by values offers the organization and how it can be used as a tool to redesign the organizational culture and channel changes towards the strategic vision of the firm.
