Walking the talk of evidence-informed decision making: CHSRF prepares for international review

As the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation enters its tenth year, it is preparing for its second quinquennial (five-year) review. This will be done by an international panel of distinguished health services experts. It will assess performance and give the foundation the evidence it needs to continue to develop programs that support evidence-informed decision-making in the health system.

The four-member panel will be chaired by Dr Gilles Dussault, former head of health administration at the University of Montreal and specialist with the World Bank and now professor and head of the health systems unit of the Institute of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in Lisbon, Portugal.

Dr Dussault is joined by panel members Mr Stephen Thornton, the chief executive of the Health Foundation in the UK; Dr Jessie Gruman, the founding president and executive director of the Centre for the Advancement of Health in Washington, DC; and Mr Jack Davis, the president and chief executive officer of the Calgary Health Region in Alberta.

Dr Dussault says:

The members of the panel and I are very honoured to be part of this review process to help the foundation support evidence-informed decision-making in the Canadian healthcare system.

Appointed by the foundation’s board of trustees, the international review panel will evaluate and report on the progress the foundation is making in achieving its mission and provide advice on future directions.

The panel will review documents over the fall and then meet in Ottawa in January 2007 to review documents and hear from foundation stakeholders. As a foundation stakeholder, you may be invited to be a witness, or you may be approached by EKOS Research Associates, an external organization seeking and assembling feedback for the panel. If you are not approached but would like to contribute to the process, please do not hesitate to contact EKOS directly at chsrf@ekos.com.

The panel will provide a report with recommendations to the board of trustees in spring 2007.

Sister Elizabeth M. Davis, chair of the foundation’s board of trustees says:

We feel very fortunate to have this exceptional and diverse group leading this essential process. The foundation is committed to the highest level of accountability in our programming, and the panel’s recommendations will help ensure that we continue on the right track.
