Internet editorial

This special edition of Facilities concentrates on fire safety facilities management. The Internet sites listed below are pointers towards electronic resources dealing with fire safety, disaster planning, evacuation, as well as general information on fire safety legislation.

UK Home office fire safety unit

The fire safety unit is concerned with fire safety policy and its effective implementation in the UK. The main aim of the unit is to review, formulate and promote measures to reduce fire incidence casualties and damage and encourage efficient and economical implementation of these measures.

The unit's Web site provides information on the interpretation and review of fire safety legislation, as well as providing guidance on other aspects of the unit's work. http://www.homeoffice.gov.uk/fepd/fsyu.htm

The home office fire safety unit Web site provides access to other relevant information, such as:

Firenet - electronic pages for the British Fire Service

An extremely useful resource giving information on a diversity of topics, including fire investigation, fire safety and hazardous materials.

Also included are examples of fire safety calculations for occupancy and estimating numbers of fire extinguishers. http://www.fire.org.uk/gateway.htm

Society of fire protection engineers

This site provides information about the Society and its services and access to general information on the profession of fire protection engineer.

Future plans for the Web site include providing information on electronic commerce and an electronic clearinghouse for technical information. There are also plans for the establishment of a "members only" section on the site. http://www.sfpe.org

  • The Chicago chapter of the society of fire protection engineers have created a virtual journal on the Web. Although quite basic, it is updated regularly and includes members information as well as new information on fire technology. The journal is available at: http://people.ce.mediaone.net/chicagosfpe/newsletter.htm

The Disaster Recovery Journal

A subscription based journal which is available in paper-based format and also on the Internet. Free access is provided to "special reports" dealing with some major disasters which have hit the USA in the last ten years. These reports are interesting reading despite being very brief and indicative only of how the situations were dealt with.

LIFELINK - disaster and emergency preparedness information, services and supplies

Information and resources on disaster preparedness planning. Links are provided to information on a wide range of other related web sites. http://www.lifelink.com/

Lytmo Pty Limited

This site provides information on Lytmo Pty Limited, a Sydney based company with over 20 years' experience in the design, installation and service of communication and security systems. Their Ampac System is Australian designed and manufactured, and fully approved to Australian Standard 2220. In Australia high rise buildings are required by law to have in place an emergency evacuation system, to enable staff, visitors and public to be evacuated in a safe and orderly manner, in the case of an emergency. The Ampac system controls such evacuation by way of integrated sound and direct warden communication. http://www.lytmo.com.au/evac.html
