Euro-MP calls for lower VAT rates on school building and improvements

The rate of value added tax on school building and improvement work should be reduced in order to help the EU to attain its Lisbon strategy objective of becoming the most competitive knowledge-based economy in the world by 2010, a Euro-MP has recommended. Belgian Socialist, Marc Tarabella, said there could not be a Europe of knowledge without the means to achieve knowledge and the future of children must not be put in jeopardy. He noted that the measure – which he intends to raise with the European Commission – would also help the building industry.
