Scouts are prepared for IT world

More than 20,000 UK Scouts have so far completed the challenges necessary to secure their British Computer Society (BCS) staged IT activity badges. BCS sponsorship of the badge began last September, in line with the society’s aim of ensuring that gaining a qualification in IT skills is available to all sectors of society. It was hoped the badge would encourage Scouts to develop their IT skills in a fun and informal way, complementing the knowledge already acquired in school.

Scouts from all ages can work towards the five stages of the badge, with each stage demanding an increased level of competency. Stage one addresses the fundamentals of IT, such as switching on a personal computer correctly. Stage five focuses on the Internet, with Scouts being expected to design a Web site and produce an Internet guide for young children. All tasks can be used to enhance Scouting activities or schoolwork. David Clarke, BCS chief executive, said: “We are delighted that the IT badge had been received so warmly by the Scouts, especially as IT is now seen as important as reading and writing. It plays a fundamental role in all our lives and we are encouraged to see so many young people eager to develop the skills that will prove vital for their future development.”
