Glenys Kinnock calls for world initiative on education

A world initiative on education should be launched urgently, says Euro-MP Glenys Kinnock. In her report on basic education in developing countries, prepared for an extraordinary session of the United National General Assembly, she called on:

  • the European Commission to work closely with national governments, non-governmental organizations, UN partners and international financial institutions to develop national programmes to ensure that all children up to the age of 15 get free, good quality education;

  • the EU to take the initiative in setting up, with national governments and the private sector, a fund worth 1 billion euros a year to provide education for all;

  • the community of donors to encourage the teaching of information and communication technologies, where the level of basic education allows.

The report emphasises that schools should be safe areas, where children's rights are respected. It considers that people of all ages should have access to primary education, if they missed out on this when they were young, and should be able to benefit from lifelong learning. Mrs Kinnock also calls for specialized teaching programmes for former child soldiers.
