Tempus programme to be extended
Keywords Europe, Education, Training, Growth
The next phase of the EU Tempus programme, which covers the next six years, will be extended to Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and Croatia, Education Commissioner, Viviane Reding, has confirmed.
She was speaking at a meeting of 35 European education ministers from the EU member states, applicant countries and south-east European nations, held to examine the relationship between education policies, social cohesion and teaching quality.
In their final statement, the ministers noted that:
- •
education should be seen as a tool of economic and social development;
- •
lifelong learning must be available to prepare people to work in a knowledge-based society;
- •
schools must be encouraged to develop their autonomy and sense of responsibility, and should co-operate more closely with national, regional and local authorities;
- •
particular attention should be paid to the possibilities of public-private partnerships, taking into account national education practices and systems.
