Abstract
Partly owing to the nonârecognition of East Germany by Britain, few people in this country know about the important economic potential across the river Elbe and behind the Berlin Wall. The German Democratic Republic (DDR) is among the top ten industrial nations of the world. It produces, per capita, more cement than Britain, more steel than Italy, more electricity than West Germany and more television sets than Britain, France or Italy.
