CORONARY HEART DISEASE IN WOMEN
Abstract
Most people tend to think of the typical heart attack victim as male, and indeed, men do have a considerably higher incidence of coronary heart disease (CHD) and higher mortality rates from the condition than women. This is particularly evident within the 33 to 44 year age group, where men have five times the CHD mortality than women of comparable age. In older groups, this ratio does fall, but overall, the female advantage is maintained. The reasons for the male‐female gap are unclear, but it is thought to be mediated, at least in part, by sex hormone differences.
