Suddenly last winter: A scenario for the 1980s
Abstract
It is said that the prospect of being hanged does wonders to sharpen the mind. Some people — apparently including the FAO — can still address the food “problem” in the simplistic terms of producing more food from available land and distributing it with some kind of equity. However, the Arab oil embargo and subsequent fuel price increases have forced many of us to realize that the world has come to the end of an era. The new economics are energy economics. The new measure of productivity is energy productivity.
