Abstract

Conflicting demands are putting the biocide industry under particular stress. Preservation and toxicology are frequently at odds. At the very time when the increasingly popular water‐borne coatings require a high level of protection, ecological pressures have made heavy metal fungicides suspect. Non‐metallic substitutes, however, still labour under various limitations. The search for really effective alternatives is therefore of topical concern.
