Abstract

The art — and science — of selection is nowhere better demonstrated than in the giant international companies who cream off the best of graduate talent. Unilever has been polishing a selection procedure for its management development scheme (UCMDS) over the past 21 years so that they now claim not many mistakes slip through their net. Every year about 60 appointments are made under the scheme out of a total of about 2,000 applicants. The lucky 60 can expect to be in the upper range of middle management level in their thirties with a salary of up to £7,000.
