Abstract
It has often been argued that all our thinking on management and organisation is cyclical. That is we move from one extreme to another as we realise that current concepts and structures are not achieving the tasks that we set for them as effectively and efficiently as we would wish. For example, some companies have experienced changes in organisational patterns from decentralised to centralised to decentralised within a space of ten years. Some of this constant change can be attributed to managerial fashion but some of it can also be linked to the fact that the environment within which the company operates is itself constantly changing. Thus there will always be a need for the survival‐conscious firm to re‐appraise its current stance and adapt to changed circumstance.
