Abstract

Following the recommendation of the National Libraries Committee chaired by Dr FS Dainton, the government announced in 1970 in a White Paper (Cmnd 4572) its intention of combining certain institutions (including the NCL and the NLL) into a single organisation called the British Library. It proposed that the lending activities should be concentrated at Boston Spa and that the operations of the NCL should be transferred to Boston Spa as soon as this move could conveniently be carried out.
