(G. T. Williams graduated from Bristol University in 1952 and has spent most of his career as a consulting engineer. After design experience in reinforced and pre‐stressed concrete and site work as resident engineer on a major dry dock he joined Bullen and Partners as project engineer for the structural work on Dungeness ‘B’ Nuclear Power Station, becoming a partner in that firm in 1973. He has carried out design and supervision contracts in the Middle East and has had particular responsibility for inspection and remedial works to defective concrete structures ranging from modern tower blocks to sixty year old apartment buildings.)

Abstract
Concrete is the most basic of building materials and yet, in the hands of the expert, is capable of providing strength, durability and even elegance far in excess of many of its manufactured competitors. The technology is by now well established but the production of concrete of a consistently good quality is by no means simple.
