Purpose – Gives advice on how to set up training programs that are based on “learning by doing”. Design/methodology/approach – Draws on Kolb’s four-stage model of learning to discuss how people learn and the ways in which trainers can create the right circumstances that will encourage learning. Sets out the framework of a training session that would accomplish this, indicating the training techniques to use at each stage of the training. Findings – Argues that this participative approach to training is an effective way of ensuring that training is transferred to the workplace. Originality/value – Offers a practical account of how to develop and deliver participative training.ISSN: 1465-6523Reference: 35AJ622
