Purpose – Presents research which looked at how international firms develop global managers. Design/methodology/approach – Describes the research, which was based on eight case studies of large international firms, including the United Nations System (which includes 30 independent or semi-independent bodies including the World Health Organization and the United Nations, itself), PricewaterhouseCoopers and the HSBC (banking). Sets out the methods that these organizations use to develop their international managers, including the use of competency-based development, secondments and international assignments. Findings – Points to the difficulties caused to international management development by the new approach to career development among employees, which focuses on opportunities in the external job market, and the demand for work-life balance. However, concludes that this research indicates that organizations continue to invest in international management development, although their methods might be changing. Originality/value – Reviews the current approach to international management development.ISSN: 1358-6297Reference: 35AE684
