Purpose – to describe, very briefly, how the owner/manager of a business, PJR Print Systems (a print management firm), went about delegating some of his responsibilities to other people in the organization. Design/methodology/approach – provides a very short profile of the company and outlines why Phil Newton (the owner/manager) decided that some of his responsibilities should be delegated. Looks at the coaching program that Newton and staff at the company participated in, and notes some of the initiatives Newton implemented in order to empower his staff to run the business without him. Mentions some of the outcomes that have been achieved from the coaching program, notably that Newton has managed to reduce his working time to four days a week. Provides a short guide to implementing a coaching program in ten steps, and identifies several mistakes that Newton feels others could learn from. Concludes with several very general learning points for HR and a quote from a satisfied employee.
