Circuit World has a long association with both the Institute of Circuit Technology and the Printed Circuit Interconnection Federation (PCIF) and, although there have been many changes in the PCB industry over recent years, it is intended that these strong links will both continue and grow as we move into the future. The PCIF has recently become part of a much larger trade association called Intellect which represents a broader cross section of the UK electronics industry. The benefits of having a more unified voice are clear when the industry needs to interact with government and legislators on key issues affecting the industry such as environmental legislation.

Within Intellect there is a very active Environmental Working Group tackling specific issues affecting the PCB industry and in recent years the group has undertaken a number of important projects with support from both its member companies and organisations such as the DTI and Envirowise. With an approach embracing sustainable development, this group has worked on the development of new technologies for the recycling and reuse of materials used in circuit fabrication and it has also helped to produce a number of Good Practice Guides and a Legislation Database for use by the PCB industry.

In this issue of Circuit World there are two papers detailing specific aspects of this type of activity. The first paper details work carried out to assess the viability of using new advanced oxidation techniques for destroying organic compounds found in PCB manufacturing waste and the second describes the possibilities for recycling the plastic drums that PCB process chemical manufacturers use for supplying their chemistry to the industry. This is work that is both important and valuable to circuit manufacturers and Circuit World is pleased to be able to play its part in the dissemination of this information to a wider audience.
