Background

The RIO+5 country summary reports have revealed that there are many ongoing activities which are being undertaken in pursuit of sustainable natural resources and economic development. Underlying these activities is the need for providing and ensuring access to environmental data and information by all decision makers ­ not just those in charge of policy decisions. The seminar will explore salient issues which must be addressed in the planning and implementation of sectoral and national environmental information systems.

    ­ integrated approach to environmental management

    ­ case studies/experiences

  • Organisation and synthesis of environmental data and information

    ­ collection of data and information

    ­ use of new information technologies for producing, organizing and analyzing data and information

    ­ use and development of environmental thesauri

    ­ case studies/experiences

  • Reporting environmental information

    ­ mechanisms for reporting at the policy level

    ­ mechanisms for reaching the wider population

    ­ issues and requirements at the international level

    ­ networking

    ­ case studies/experiences

Abstracts of papers (approximately 300 words in length) on any of the above themes should be submitted by 30 April 1998 to: Dr S.B.
