Hartzell granted STC for Top Prop on Cessna 180 for performance boost

Article Type: Equipment and software From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 81, Issue 1

Following extensive engineering development and recent FAA certification, Hartzell Propeller is now offering its 80 in. diameter, wide chord Top Prop3-blade conversion for all Cessna 180 aircraft equipped with TCM 0-470 engines (Figure 2). This conversion was previously limited to early Cessna 180 – 180D models.

Market demand for this conversion by seaplane and bush operators encouraged Hartzell to cover the entire spectrum of Cessna 180 s, an additional 2,100 potential aircraft.

The Cessna 180 propeller kit is complete and bolt-on ready, including the propeller (PHC-C3YF-1RF/F8468A-6R), highly polished aluminum spinner and STC documents (SA00852AT). Top Props are available through Hartzell’s extensive network of recommended repair facilities and other propeller repair station dealers world-wide.

“This propeller, now available for all Cessna 180 s, is the first choice of Canadian and Alaskan bush operators who can afford nothing short of the ultimate in reliability and performance, flying in some of the most rugged and inhospitable conditions on the planet”, said Mike Disbrow, Hartzell’s Senior Vice-President, Marketing and Customer Services.

“Top Prop advantages are readily apparent and complement the workhorse duties of the venerable Cessna 180,” Disbrow added. “It provides excellent takeoff and climb performance; longer TBO (2,400 h); significantly lower noise; improved appearance and ground clearance; less blade tip erosion; in a robust blade design that is aerodynamically matched to the 180.”

Specifications include 80 in. diameter (reducible to 77 in.), aluminum hub, 2,400 h/6 year TBO, weight: 75.

The Cessna 180 Top Prop replaces McCauley C66; C201; C203; C204 and Hartzell steel hub two-blade props. Top Props come with the exclusive Hartzell Plus Three warranty, which delivers a full three years or 1,000 h of coverage.

Hartzell is also now offering its three-bladed Top Prop propeller for the new Beechcraft Bonanza G36 piston single aircraft. The new STC applies to all F33 A, V35B, A36 and G36 Bonanzas powered by factory original TCM IO-520 and IO-550 engines, including aircraft equipped with 28 V electrothermal propeller de-ice systems.

The propeller is one of Hartzell’s latest blended airfoil designs made possible by employing advanced CNC milling technology to maintain the outstanding structural characteristics of the original Hartzell Bonanza blades, while incorporating aerodynamic improvements and efficiencies in the new tip section. The scimitar-shaped, swept tip Top Prop blades are free of life-limiting Airworthiness Directives and come with the longest TBO available for a Bonanza propeller system (6 years/2,400 h).

Like the previous Top Prop for Bonanzas, the new STC propeller conversion comes with a 2,400 h/6 year TBO and the exclusive Hartzell Plus Three warranty which provides a full three years or 1,000 h of coverage.
