TMD Technologies well placed to help MOD tackle green challenge

Article Type: Equipment and software From: Aircraft Engineering and Aerospace Technology: An International Journal, Volume 80, Issue 5

The commitment made last year by the Ministry of Defence to saving energy through a sustainable development action plan could be helped by TMD Technologies. TMD’s travelling wave tube (TWT) components used in military and civilian radar systems use significantly less energy than comparable solid state systems, and so could play a valuable role in cutting the MOD’s carbon footprint.

“We welcome the MOD’s commitment to saving energy”, said TMD Sales Director Graham H. Brown. “It is a policy we also support with our own products.”

One of the technological advantages claimed of the company’s TWT systems is their relatively low-energy requirements. The energy savings can be significant, since the TMD’s S band tube systems reportedly has almost twice the efficiency of solid state alternatives, while its X band tube systems is said to perform at nearly three times the efficiency. They also claim to have lower total life cycle costs, which saves energy as well as costs.

The MOD’s sustainable development action plan has a target of reducing CO2 emissions by 15 per cent by 2012, through increased energy efficiency, reducing energy consumption, and investing in more sustainable technologies.
