The University of Southampton undergraduate courses in Aerospace Engineering have received Preferred Status recognition by BAE Systems, the largest aerospace and defence company in Europe and third largest in the world. The University is one of only three in the country to have received this recognition from BAE Systems, confirming its leading position in engineering education.

BAE Systems - the newly formed company resulting from the merger of British Aerospace with Marconi Electronic Systems will support the Preferred Status courses with materials, visiting lecturers, project work, industrial placements, staff exchanges and graduate recruitment.

Dr Graham Roberts, Deputy Head of the School of Engineering Sciences, said that the general standard and outlook of graduates of the courses who have subsequently been employed by British Aerospace and GEC-Marconi Systems were major factors in influencing the company's decision to select Southampton. He said:

I am delighted that the quality of our courses and teaching has been fully recognized by such a prestigious company.

The Aerospace Engineering courses already enjoy high recruitment levels, but it is anticipated that this new development will boost recruitment even further.
